Bernadette CreminAfter a run of sell-out poetry events, the organisers of Chichester’s Open Mic Poetry are hoping to repeat the trick when performance poet Bernadette Cremin tops the bill at the New Park Centre on Wednesday 26th October.

Bernadette is well-known on the Brighton circuit, having established herself as an exciting performer of poetry set to music. Her writing includes a cast of call girls and ham actors, moody photos and bed-sit divas. As John O’Donoghue of Waterloo Press says, ‘If Tom Waites had a beautiful stepsister she would sound like Bernadette Cremin.’

Although Speechless is the latest volume of her poetry to make its mark, Bernadette hasn’t always been a writer, having previously worked as a social worker, tea lady, teacher, bank clerk and waitress. This chequered career path has, she says, invaluably enriched her true vocation of poet and performer.

Barry Smith, spokesman for the open mic group, said, ‘We’ve been delighted with the audience response recently, with people queuing for tickets for our summer Poetry & Jazz in the Festivities, while guest poets Mario Petrucci and Liz Adams performed to a packed library audience last month. We’re hoping Bernadette will continue the trend at the New Park.’

Local poets will get the chance to read their work on the same bill as Bernadette in the open mic section of the evening. Poetry on any subject and in any style is welcomed. ‘No experience is necessary,’ said Barry. ‘Our audiences are equally supportive to people who’ve written whole books or just one poem.’

Open Mic Poetry, Wednesday 26th October, 7.45pm, New Park Centre, Chichester.Tickets £3 on the door. Further information: 07813244731.
