The Oxmarket Centre of Arts is pleased to announce that it is now accepting entries for this year’s Stride Open Art Exhibition, scheduled for the end of September.

A highlight of the Oxmarket year, this competition always attracts a wide range of entries which makes it difficult to trim down to the 125 they can actually hang. The exhibition of the selected entrants will run from 20th September to 1st October, enabling regional artists to see their successful work hung, and visitors to savour their unique perspectives on our world.

Of course, part of the attraction is the element of competition and prize winning. Long term sponsors, Stride and Son of Chichester, are yet again putting up the funds for substantial cash prizes, and there will also be an abstract work prize donated by Lawrence Williams. But this isn’t all that the competition is about. Oxmarket’s mission as an art centre was formalised in 2009 when they declared that their  purpose was to ‘foster the creative talents of artists of all ages in all media and encourage public appreciation of their work‘. This competition is designed to do just that, and the competition’s success is shown in the work of last year’s winners, Heather Kruk (1st Prize), Sue England and Katharine Swailes (Joint 2nd Prize) and Barbara Winkler (Lawrence Williams Prize for Abstract Art Painting.)

So, they are looking for the widest range of “hangable” art, and especially entries from those who have previously shied away from putting their work on public display. They want this display of local talent to at least match, and perhaps even to exceed (if that is possible), that of last year, and yet again to see the ‘wow factor’ as the walls of the John Rank gallery are filled to busting point with successful entries. They want our public to come, view, and buy these genuine original works of art at a remarkable range of prices. Oxmarket are keen to see the deserving winners receive their prize from this year’s guest of honour Colin Channon, Chichester Observer editor and true supporter of localism in all its aspects.

First Prize this year is £300. Second Prize £150.  Third Prize and Abstract Prize are £50 each.  Cost of entry is £10 for each submission (£7.50 with membership) with a maximum of four entries per person.
Entry forms are available from Oxmarket reception.
