Radio station Capital FM is going nationwide
The network, previously only available in London, is being broadcast across the country from 10am today and is expected to reach more than 6.5 million people. The lauch coincides with a relauch of the website and a new look CapitalFM.com and local websites for each new region.
Capital FM London will remain a London-centric station, whilst the new quasi-national network will mostly recieve a second feed with pre-recorded links from Leicester Square. Local breakfast and drive shows will remain on weekdays in Scotland, North East, Yorkshire, Manchester, Birmingham, East Midlands, South Wales, South Coast and London.
Ashley Tabor, founder of Global Radio, which owns Capital FM, said:
“This is a monumental day for British commercial radio, Capital FM, and Global. The UK has never had a national commercial hits station before, this is game changing – another national brand, delivered locally, from Global Radio.”
The last figures issued by radio body Rajar found Capital had a weekly reach of 2.12 million in London.
There has been speculation the station would hire Chris Moyles if he leaves Radio 1, but Mr Tabor appeared to rule that out last year.
Radio 2′s Chris Evans said Moyles should leave the BBC and move to the commercial sector, but Tabor – a former flatmate of Moyles – said the DJ did not fit his “strategy” of developing new talent.
